The inevitable day eventually comes in film school in which one learns the famed and much-debated Kuleshov Effect. The great director and theorist Lev Kuleshov always claimed that he and his associates learned the power of editing from American cinema. After spending the best part of two weeks in each other's company, we've really broken the back of it. The 'Kuleshov effect' refers to the Soviet filmmaker Lev Kuleshov who saw editing and film as an art form. A collection of links, fun and serious, on film and culture, to start the week. One of the most notable inclusions is the first film to come out of Lev Kuleshov's Cine-lab, The Extraodinary Adventures of Mr. €�We're still figuring out how we do it. For better or worse, here it is. Russian films were slowly paced, consisting of long tableaus occasionally broken by an inserted closer view of an actor. In order to proceed with basic film techniques I felt that a short exposition on the 'Kuleshov effect' was required. In the 1910s and 1920s, Lev Kuleshov was a famous Russian filmmaker curious about how audiences responded to film. This essay will explore these elements—including defamiliarization, creative acting, and typage—through the eyes of the Russian Formalists, focusing in particular on the works of Lev Kuleshov and Sergei Eisenstein. I have learned much about writing since producing this work, but I am publishing it here despite its flaws because it will never see the light of day if I do not make it available somewhere.
